Name: The Icewatch Inn
Type: Lone structure
Population: 5-30, including outbuildings
Allegiance: Archenland
Country: Archenland
Nearby Landmarks: East of the pass to Telmar, south of Dancing Lawn, northwest of Mount Pire.
Nearby Resources: Good forage and mountain-stream fishing
Security: Icewatch Inn is a major waypoint in the lands owned by the Archenlander knight Zoraam Hel. Its main defenses are remoteness, insignificance, altitude, and Archenlander steel. At least one or two of Hel's sons or men-at-arms are always in the area.
Description: The Icewatch Inn has a good view of the paths to Narnia in the north and Calormen in the south, as well as the pass to Telmar. Nestled in the high foothills of Archenland, the Icewatch Inn is about as big of a social hub as the region will support. Its food focuses on root vegetables, the meats of Telmarine beasts, hard winter fruits and fresh whitefish. Calormen spices make their way up with the occasional caravan. The lighting is based on cookfires; fragrant smoke hangs in the air. The outbuildings have room for a couple of small caravans. Between the inn and the outbuildings, the Icewatch can hold up to thirty people. A trio of separate mountain streams run nearby, offering constant access to clean water and fish.
Services and Points of Interest: The Icewatch Inn is an excellent place to buy basic travel supplies -- dried fish and dried fruit, warm clothes, stout walking sticks -- from the innkeeper. The innkeeper is often willing to buy things that would get Narnians killed. (Wolf pelts, for example.) If Ser Joran Hel is around, he's often willing to copy out a map from among his collection, or even sell a genuine one if the price is right or the need is dire. The Icewatch Inn is frequented by local guides and Talking Horses (the two are not mutually exclusive) who offer their services to travellers. A village is nearby, including Sir Zoraam's small fort; the village has other services, as well as the occasional small building for sale.
Personalities:
- Sir Joran Hel, 31, human. Second son of Sir Zoraam Hel, the local lord. Sir Joran is a hard-drinking explorer with a love of maps. He has no family of his own, though he visits a Calormen girl in Arakshaam from time to time. He is usually accompanied by a couple of archers or men-at-arms.
- Barlowe, 45, human. Innkeeper. Barlowe (no first name known) has been tending the Icewatch Inn for close to three decades. His trade connections reach into the Calormen Empire and the Telmarine lands, and he's a valuable waypoint for all sorts of small caravans.
- Leaves-in-the-Morning, hamadryad. Cook. Despite her personal appreciation for dirt, Leaves is a very good cook and a welcoming hostess.
